Calling all readers and book lovers! Join us on January 11th at 6 p.m. on zoom for a mandatory virtual training for our 10th Annual RISE: Reading Inspirational Stories to Empower. Originally planned to be in person, but moved to a virtual format to help reduce the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, the training will last about an hour, during which time you will be assigned your book and classroom!
During RISE week, happening January 18 – 21, volunteers sign up to read books about the civil rights movement and social justice issues to local elementary and middle school classrooms. Volunteer sessions last for as little as 30 minutes, but make a lasting impression through stories and discussions. This year, volunteers have to the choice of reading in person to Rosedale classrooms or to reading virtually via zoom or a pre-recorded video. Afterward, volunteers will engage students in a discussion about advocacy. Using our youth advocacy guide, students will advocate for change they want to see in their community, continuing the work that Dr. King started over 60 years ago.
