Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it is also a time to try new things. At least, that was the case for 10 middle school students during Rosedale Development Association’s Summer Mural Arts program.
“I have enjoyed painting the mural, meeting new friends and learning all about art,” said Derrious, one Summer Mural Arts program participant attending Rosedale Middle School.
From July 22 through July 31, participants spent time learning about art and design from Brian Lloyd, Curé of Ars Catholic School art teacher, and Elizabeth Johnston, president and creative director of Lizzardbrand Inc. The program concluded by putting the youth’s new skills to work: updating a section of the Rosedale mural, located at 42nd Ave. and Mission Rd.
“I thought the mural project would be a great way for me to get involved in the community, as art and design are what I do all day long. Volunteering with RDA is soul food for me,” Johnston said.
But the program could not have happened without the generous support of our sponsors. Thanks to Artist and Craftsman Supply, Marsh’s Sun Fresh, Papa John’s Pizza, Nature’s Own Health Market, R.J. Barrientos and Associates, Westlake Hardware and Strasser Hardware for donating snacks and project supplies.
Nicole, another Summer Mural Arts program participant, said, “I really enjoyed painting the mural. The people who did it with us were very kind and also very talented.”
