Summer has ended, kids are back in school and the 18th year of Rosedale Development Association’s Summer Youth Employment program (SYE) has come to a close.
This year 21 Rosedale youth applied to join the program and start building their résumés. Ten students completed the program by working at six different businesses, located in and around the Rosedale area. The 2015 cohort of SYE had a very productive summer, completing 1,083 hours of work.
In addition to working with area businesses, Lunch & Learn sessions were held each Friday at the RDA office where the youth learned new skills, and discussed their positions and the progress made. Seven guest speakers from the community were brought in to teach various topics such as learning styles assessments, taxes and money management, first impressions, accessing opportunities, and the interview process.
A celebratory barbecue was held in late July to end the program, where each youth was awarded a certificate of completion. Monica Coronado and Angel Quintana, two of the youth who participated in the program, shared their experiences with those in attendance.
Quintana said, “I had the opportunity to gain experience and do work related to my future career goals.”
We are grateful to our business partners and the Board of Public Utilities for their support of the program.
