Thanks to funding from the Board of Public Utilities, Rosedale Development Association just wrapped up its 20th year of the Summer Youth Employment program.
This year ten students participated, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old. Participants were placed in local businesses such as Southwest Boulevard Family Health Care, Little Angels Day Care, and Vista Manufacturing.
To further enhance the students’ experience, they attended “Lunch and Learn” sessions each Friday while participating in the program. Guest speakers discussed topics such as how to open a bank account, how to make and update a resume, and how to maintain healthy finances.
Dan DeMaria, RDA board member and Systems Director of Healthcare Technology Management at Saint Luke’s Hospital, hosted a “Lunch and Learn” session where he taught the students interview skills. He gave tips, shared stories about his interview experience and even conducted mock interviews so the students could practice how to conduct a productive interview.
Vanessa, a Summer Youth employee working at Vista Manufacturing, said she learned, “how to not be nervous, be confident, and act like you’re meant for the position.”
“I will also take this experience with me through high school and college,” she said.
