RDA is currently planning its annual RISE program, and we’re looking for volunteers like you.
Every January for the past four years, RDA has hosted RISE, which stands for Reading Inspirational Stories to Empower. During the week following Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Rosedale volunteers sign up to read stories about the Civil Rights Movement and social justice issues to local elementary school students.
In 2015 alone, 26 volunteers read stories like “Freedom Summer” and “Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King” to 36 classrooms, or about 720 students.
“We appreciate the interest shown by our community in volunteering to read to our students and lead a discussion about the importance of treating all people with respect and fairness,” Frank Rushton Principal Mary Welsh said.
All are invited to join us for this special event. Volunteer sessions last for as little as 30 minutes, but make a lasting impression through stories and discussions. To get involved, RSVP for our RISE volunteer orientation at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11 at 1401 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, KS.
